Close-up of Flannel Bush flowers, early spring
A spectacular native shrub or small tree found in the foothills around the California Central Valley and down the Coast Range into the San Gabriel and Santa Ana Mountains of southern California. It is deciduous and produces copious bright yellow flowers in the early spring. Flannel bush is fast-growing, prefers well-drained soil in the proximity of a water source, yet is intolerant of summer surface watering and any hardwood pruning.
