A large native shrub or small tree found in the coast ranges from Oregon south to the San Francisco Bay and in the Sierra foothills south to east of Bakersfield. In the spring it is covered with white or faintly pinkish flowers, and in the fall it produces large clusters of mat (not shiny), hairy, dark red berries.
Another manzanita, Arctostaphylos manzanita (Common Manzanita) grows in the Mariposa County area too. It is distinguished from Whiteleaf Manzanita by having darker green leaves; redder stems and petioles (leaf stems); and larger, shiny purple-red berries.
